Labradors are a wonderful, loyal family dog. They are even tempered and easily trained. They live for up to 15 years (average about 12 years). There are two distinct types of labradors the "American" Labrador and the "English" labrador. The American labradors are taller, leaner dogs, they generally have more energy and are sometimes considered hyper. These dogs have been bred to run the fields retrieving birds. The "English" labrador is the stockier show type dog. These dogs still have a strong hunting instinct and many of these dogs are successful at having show "Careers" as well as getting "Hunt" titles. The show dogs tend to be more mellow than their hunting counterparts. Both types of labradors love the constant companionship of "their" people. Labs become large dogs ranging anywhere from 50 lbs-100 lbs. Labradors tend to shed a lot of hair. When making a commitment to a labrador you must be prepared to socialize your dog and allow them plenty of opportunity to exercise or they can become destructive. The dog pounds are full of labrador mix dogs looking for homes, please consider giving one of these dogs a forever home.
